Garber's Goal for MLS Cup Playoff Expansion

Major League Soccer announced plans to expand the MLS Cup playoffs to ten teams. Currently, the playoffs are made up of eight teams that qualify from tw regions, the East and the West.

By Michael King

As Major League Soccer enjoys the exposure surrounding the Colorado’s victory in Sunday’s MLS Cup, questions remain regarding the future of the league’s playoff structure.

Commissioner Don Garber announced during halftime of the final that the league would increase the number of playoff spots to 10, a two-team expansion over the current system.

However, he’s yet to announce plans for the league’s playoff format. With the league adding two teams next season (the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps), and the possibility of more expansion in the coming years, Garber believes it’s the appropriate time to reevaluate the league’s playoff structure.

“We are basically telling our fans that we have a goal and a vision to be one of the top soccer leagues in the world,” Garber said during halftime of the Cup Final on ESPN. “As we are thinking about our playoff format, our competition calendar, it makes sense for us to start really digging into whether or not this makes sense. We have been thinking about it for the last year, and it certainly is a message we want to say to the international soccer community: We are going to get closer to the way the rest of the world plays.”

Colorado has been there before. Dallas has not.

Dallas posted an unbeaten streak of 19 (20, if you want to count its 1-1 friendly against Inter Milan). Colorado had a mere streak of five – impressive in its own right, but not as dominating.

Come Sunday, dismiss all the numbers, all the stats, the “should-haves” and “did-nots,” and focus on the Rapids and the Hoops. No more analyzing the past, but hanging on the present as both sides battle for the MLS Cup.

FC Dallas has Date With Colorado Rapids in MLS Cup Final; Hoops Beat Los Angeles Galaxy to Advance

FC Dallas proved its the best team in the Western Conference last night by beating Major League Soccer’s top team in the regular season, the Los Angeles Galaxy, 3-0. Dallas beat Real Salt Lake in the semi-finals to move on to face what looked like an unbeatable Galaxy team. Los Angeles manhandled very good Seattle Sounders team in the semi-finals.

Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman cemented his place as the league’s best man between the pipes this year with a handful of spectacular saves. And David Ferriera proved, again, that he is the best player in the MLS this season and the league’s MVP. The Hoops midfielder pulled all the right strings and scored the match winner while assisting another another goal.

The Hoops have now beat both of last year’s MLS Cup finalist on their way to the MLS Cup final. Next up, an impressive Colorado Rapids team lead by the dangerous Omar Cummings.

MLS Cup Preview and Predictions

Before the 2010 MLS Cup Playoffs commence we’ll take a bit of a look at the conference matchups before the first leg of the postseason starts. Will the Red Bulls take home the cup this year? Can Los Angeles make up for last year’s finals loss? Or will Real Salt Lake add another to their trophy case?

The West

Coming into the 2010 MLS Cup, RSL look to be one of the favorites to take home the Cup. The Royals had a solid season and look poised to make a deep postseason run. For the defending champs, they could become the third team in MLS history to win back-to-back titles. Real, the No. 2 seed coming into the tournament, takes on a Dallas team that has limped their way into the playoffs including losses to Western Conference foes, LA and Real.
