MLS First Kick: New England Revolution at San Jose Earthquakes

By Kevin Koczwara

The New England Revolution didn’t get the easiest of season openers. The Revolution start the season on the west coast , where the Revs haven’t won since Sept. 26 2009 when they beat the Seattle Sounders, 1-0, with the San Jose Earthquakes.

New England hopes to end a 10 game winless streak on the west coast, 0-8-2, and begin its new season with a win for its new coach, Jay Heaps.

New England Revolution trying to catch up with new facilities and new approach

By Kevin Koczwara

Changes needed to happen for the New England Revolution to keep up with the rest of Major League Soccer. The Revolution enjoyed success in the mid-2000’s, but as the decade came to a close the Revs fell so far behind the rest of the league that they can barely see the rest of the league’s brake lights ahead. This winter, New England’s front office staff set out on a mission to change that, to get the team back on track and catch it up with the rest of the league.

Jose ‘Pepe’ Moreno forces the Revolution to look for another path, for now

Jose "Pepe" Moreno signed with the new England Revolution and now seems to be backing out of the deal. Not a good sign for the Revs.

 By Kevin Koczwara

“We still don’t know with certainty that the quotes attributed to him were in fact his, so if they are, we need to understand what he’s dealing with and where his feelings are coming from before we proceed and find some resolution on the matter.” — Brian Bilello, President of The New England Revolution

A week or so after the Major League Soccer SuperDraft I spoke with Mike Burns, General Manager of the New England Revolution, about the team’s latest signings, John Lozano and Fernando Cárdenas, from Colombia. Burns said he and coach Jay Heaps went down to Colombia one weekend to watch the league’s relegation playoffs. In passing Burns mentioned he and Heaps had discussions with other players.

New England Revolution General Manager Mike Burns felt pretty good about his team’s draft picks in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. New England picked Generation adidas (GA) and UCLA midfielder Kelyn Rowe with the 3rd pick in the draft and GA defender Tyler Polak from Creighton with the 22nd pick. But there is always a hint of doubt when talking about MLS draft picks because, like with every other draft in professional sports, there are intangibles that can’t be measured and no one knows how a player will develop as a professional.

New England Revolution fill needs with signing of Lozano and Cárdenas

Players signed on one-year loans with option to buy

By Kevin Koczwara

On Monday, Jan. 9, the New England Revolution announced the signing of two players from Colombia, John Lozano and Fernando Cárdenas. Cárdenas and Lozano signed with the Revs from América de Cali, which competed in Colombia’s Apertura league until it was relegated at the end of the season after losing in a playoff in penalty kicks.

Revs producing early question marks

By Ryan Fleming

The New England Revolution continue to flip and flop their roster with moves that many could see coming. There are those, still, that have many losing their hair, following up with the obligatory “here we go again” motto.

Bill Littlefield: An Interview with the host of Only a Game

 By Kevin Koczwara

Bill LiIttlefield has been talking sports on his weekly radio show Only a Game on WBUR and NPR since 1993. Since Only a Game’s inception, Littlefield and his team of producers/reporters have brought a special perspective to sports and sports news and commentary.

Only a Game doesn’t take the easy way out. It doesn’t report on the easy or hot-button stories every week. Instead, Littlefield and company work at finding different angles to over reported and over hyped stories, to finding gems hidden beneath the footprints other journalists leave while forgetting the value of digging deeper and seeing stories in another light. Only a Gamei’s a radio program dedicated to exploring and discovering.

Jay Heaps Has Been Working for This Opportunity

The New England Revolution officially announced Jay Heaps the team's newest manager on Wednesday, November 16. (Courtesy New England Revolution/revolutionsoccer.net)

 By Kevin Koczwara

Jay Heaps jumped at the opportunity to work at Morgan Stanley after he retired from professional soccer in 2009. The offer: spend six-months in an intense program where he would learn to manage money, invest in the present and the future in an business environment (Private Wealth Management) where success is measured in tangible numbers. Where success is managed in profit and making progress. He took the job because he didn’t see any coaching jobs he really wanted, and because it was a great opportunity. And Heaps doesn’t miss many opportunities.

Revolution names Jay Heaps new head coach

By Kevin Koczwara

Jay Heaps played 11 seasons in Major League Soccer and was one of the league’s top defenders during his career. Now, two years after retiring, the Nashua, N.H. native will again be stepping back on the field. This time, though, he won’t be going toe-to-toe with opposition, but rather, he will be the new manager of the New England Revolution.

The team announced Heap’s appointment Tuesday morning and said he will assume the duties immediately.
