Part of why I love the game of soccer, besides waking at sunrise to watch European matches, is the announcers. You can hear it in their voices, they love this game. They breathe and live this game. Even though they’re in the booth, at times it feels as though they are on the field, connecting with the game, breathing in the smell of the damp grass and living on every touch of the ball, every break. They aren’t fans of teams or clubs when they’re in the booth. They’re fans of the game. And the best announcers are believers in the game.

MLS Week 1 Highlights

The first week of MLS play started off just as most had expected. Seattle beat the newcomers, The Philadelphia Union, pretty easily. Los Angeles beat an ailing New England side, who didn’t go without a fight despite their short bench. Real Salt Lake picked up where they left off last season with a thumping of San Jose. The Texas teams played to a draw, Houston and Dallas, which is no surprise because they are on about the same level. Chivas struggled to score goals, like usual, against a tough minded Colorado side. New York beat Chicago in their home opener at their beautiful new stadium with a miraculous goal. Kansas City trounced D.C. United. And the Columbus Crew beat up Toronto.

Their weren’t man surprises in the result column, but their were some great goals. Here is a recap of all of them courtesy of ESPN.

MLS and Players Need to Compromise, Quickly

Fans of the MLS may have to wait for the next season to start. Player contract negotiations and bargaining agreement talks have stalled.

The owners and players look to be in a deadlock. Their horns locked tight like two male bucks fighting for the classiest deer out there.

The season is approaching and the two sides need Roger Sherman to be resurrected to help the two sides come together, and have another great compromise if they hope to get the season started on time.
